Treadmills and exercise bikes are two of the most popular fitness equipment around. Both are easy to use and excellent in burning calories. If you’re a regular in the gym, the decision of which one to use may be limited on which one is available. However, if you go to the gym during non-peak hours and most of the machines are free to use, or if you’re planning to buy a fitness equipment for home use, the question arises — which is better, the treadmill or the exercise bike?
Treadmill
The treadmill has been burning calories for a long time now. It has been the most popular and best selling fitness equipment for generations.
Treadmills, which are primarily designed for weight-bearing exercises, such as running or waking, are now also used for cross training, interval training, and more. They burn calories more efficiently that most equipment available, and are excellent for cardiovascular workouts. People on treadmills burn 750 calories per hour on average, compared to 550 calories per hour for people on exercise bikes.
Treadmills, however, tend to be more expensive. Manual treadmills may be cheaper than motorized treadmills, but they do not have advanced features such as power incline, and heart rate and calorie monitors.
Exercise Bike
The exercise bike is also one of the most popular fitness equipment that can provide a good aerobic workout. Exercise bikes work just like regular bikes, but most find the exercise bikes more convenient to use since it allows you to bike indoors (no environmental disturbances and no traffic accident risks).
Exercise bikes are less expensive than treadmills, which is probably one of its best advantages. You don’t need to save up a huge amount of money to get one for yourself.
Using exercise bikes also provide workouts with low or no impact, putting less stress on the knees, ankles, hips, feet and the spine. However, unlike the treadmills, exercise bikes cannot provide an overall body workout.
